CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Rebel Encampment, Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Zia was a woman of her word, and when she’d pledged her loyalty to the Therians, she’d meant it with every fiber of her being. After turning her, Nadya had left Zia with her defenseless seven-year-old daughter, thinking the child would be her first meal. The vampire had been wrong about her—extremely wrong.

From the relative safety of her tent as the only vampire in a camp full of rebellious dragons, Zia thought about the events that brought her to this point. Meditating on her experiences, new purpose, and substantial life changes helped Zia maintain her hold on the reality in which she wasn’t an evil monster. Daily, she took time to sit quietly and remember how she’d gotten here and who she was.

Zia closed her eyes and remembered the worst day of her life.

After Nadya had kicked her ass and changed her, she’d woken in the car with her terrified daughter shaking her and the sinkhole creeping closer. The relief on Adrianna’s tear-stained face when she’d stirred had been replaced by fear when she’d seen Zia’s red eyes. The poor girl had thought her mother was dead, and on seeing her familiar eyes blazing scarlet, Adrianna had fainted.

Nadya had been right about one thing. Zia had woken with a monstrous thirst…for justice. She craved blood like nothing she’d ever wanted in her life, but her first instinct had been to embrace Adrianna and get her to safety. After they crawled through the wreckage and gore, Zia had taken her daughter to her father’s home and called for help. She had no family she could trust with the truth of her situation, and her father couldn’t care for Adrianna after the stroke.

Having little choice, Zia left Adrianna watching cartoons with her bedridden grandfather and hid in the bathroom to call her battle buddy from the Army. “Skye, I need your help. We’re talking a doomsday-level shitstorm here.”

Skye Warren’s response had been automatic, as Zia had known it would be. The woman was as dependable as the sunrise. “Who do I need to kill?”

Possibly me, Zia thought. “I can’t explain over the phone. Have you heard about the attacks in Yelizovo, Russia?” It had only been a few hours, so she imagined the news might not have spread.

“I saw something about a ruptured gas main causing a massive explosion at a strip mall,” Skye answered.

“It wasn’t a gas main. It was an attack. I was there with my daughter. We survived, but I need you, Skye. They did something to me. Changed me. I need someone to protect my family so I can go kill the bitch that stole my life from me.” Zia forced herself to relax when she heard the plastic case of her cell phone cracking from the pressure of her clenched fist.

“I’m on my way, Z. Can you hold it together until I get there?”

“I…I think so. If I haven’t hurt anyone yet, I don’t think I will,” Zia replied.

“Give me twelve hours, and I’ll be at your door.
